Tooth Care
For Children

Dental care for children is an important part of keeping your child healthy. With good dental habits and routine dental visits, you can help prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and other dental problems in your child.

It’s never too early to start teaching your child about how to take care of their teeth. Here are some tips to help keep your child’s teeth healthy:

Talk About Teeth

As a parent, you want your child to be healthy and strong. A great way to help them be their best is to teach them how to properly care for their teeth. Make caring for teeth fun. Let your child pick out their own toothbrush and toothpaste. They will have more fun brushing if they have a toothbrush with their favourite character on it or a flavour of toothpaste that they like.

Routine Dental Visits

It’s important that your child visit a dentist regularly. They should visit the dentist at least twice per year, or as often as recommended by their doctor or paediatrician. These visits will allow the dentist to assess the health of your child’s teeth, and provide you with recommendations on how to keep them healthy.

Tooth-Friendly Food and Drinks

Foods and drinks high in sugar can contribute to tooth decay, so it’s best to avoid sugary snacks and drinks as much as possible. If you need to give your child something sweet, do so at mealtimes when their saliva production is highest. Saliva helps wash away bacteria in the mouth that can lead to cavities.

Fluoride Toothpaste and Mouthwash

Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay by strengthening the enamel on teeth and reducing bacterial growth on the teeth. It’s recommended that children brush with a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste twice a day once in the morning and at bedtime.

Teach Your Child How to Floss Their Teeth

Did you know that children’s teeth need to be flossed just like adult teeth do? It’s true! Kids often lose their baby teeth by the time they’re 12, but that doesn’t mean the process of caring for them can end. Flossing is a great way to make sure your child’s mouth stays healthy. Here’s how it works:

  1. Get a piece of floss about 18 inches long.
  2. Wrap each end around your index fingers, leaving about an inch in between.
  3. Guide the floss gently between your child’s teeth and gums, using a back and forth motion to get rid of plaque and bacteria.

Keep doing this until you’ve cleaned all of your child’s teeth, helping them if they need it!

Devise a Reward System

To help them keep on top of this routine, you can devise a reward system that incentivizes proper dental hygiene: for example, if they brush their teeth for two minutes twice a day for a week, they can earn a new toy or treat.
