Are you in search of dental braces services in Harare, Zimbabwe? Then you have come to the right place. Dental braces are special tools that are used for treating and straightening teeth over time.
They are an effective way of treating malocclusion, also known as bad bites or irregular bites, which result in a crooked smile.
Kids, adults, teens and seniors can get braces
Braces are the most commonly used orthodontic devices. They are custom made to fit your teeth and gums. They can be used on:
- Children from the age of 7 years, following an orthodontic assessment by your dentist
- Adults (over 18) for correcting a minor alignment problem or cosmetically for improving the appearance of the teeth.
- Seniors (over 60) for retaining existing dentures and aligning existing teeth They are also used to treat: Crossbites or overbites Malocclusions (bad bite)
- Problems with tongue thrusting, or sucking and biting habits that affect tooth alignment
Your dentist will assess your teeth, discuss your options and make recommendations on what treatment you need. Braces can be fixed onto your teeth using wires and brackets. The wires are attached to the brackets and then connected together to move your teeth into place.
Your dentist can also design removable braces, which attach with small rubber bands instead of wires. On average, patients have to wear their braces between 12-18 months.
However, it may take longer depending on the severity of your problem and how quickly you respond to treatment. Once the braces have been removed there is a good chance that fine-tuning will be required.

There are different kinds of braces
Your orthodontic treatment will involve the use of one or more of the following types of braces:
Metal braces are most common. They are made of stainless steel which is high grade. Today’s metal braces are smaller and less noticeable than the “metal-mouth” braces that many people may remember. Nowadays, there’s the option of adding collared rubber bands to your metal braces.
Ceramic braces known as Clear braces are manufactured from see-through, clear material. This makes them less visible when you have them put in. They are mainly used by teens adults who may have concerns regarding how they look.
Ceramic braces can be an option for teens and adults concerned about the look of conventional metal brackets. The brackets used in this type of treatment are clear or tooth-coloured, making them less visible on teeth than traditional metal brackets.
In addition, the wire used to connect them is clear or tooth-coloured as well. This minimizes its visibility in the mouth, making ceramic braces a cosmetic alternative to traditional metal brackets.*
What are braces made of?
Braces are made of many different components. Each component plays a specific role in straightening your teeth and correcting your bite. Here’s a brief look at the primary parts:
Brackets — These are the tiny squares that are attached or, more accurately, bonded through a dental bonding agent to your teeth. Alternatively, they are connected to orthodontic bands. Brackets act like handles, holding the arch wires that move the teeth.
Some brackets are clear or tooth-coloured and some are metal. Some brackets attach to the front (labial) of each tooth and some attach to the sides (buccal). There are also self-ligating brackets that don’t require elastic ties, which help reduce friction between the braces and improve their efficiency.
Arch wires — These connect to each bracket and help guide the teeth into their correct positions. Elastic ties/o-rings — Made of rubber, these o-rings hold the arch wire onto the brackets and come in many colours so you can accessorize your braces!
Bands — Bands wrap around back teeth (molars) and act as anchor points for the brackets. They either go around individual teeth or multiple teeth. Bands provide more stability than brackets do and help distribute forces evenly across all
What steps do I take when getting them?
What steps do I take when getting braces?
1) Consultation: You will need to consult with an orthodontist who specializes in braces, they will be able to tell you more about the different types of braces and what will work best for your teeth. They can also give you information on how long it will take for them to work and how much it will cost.
2) X-rays: Your orthodontist will likely want x-rays taken of your mouth and teeth
How long will treatment take?
The time it takes to complete treatment with dental braces depends on your individual needs and the type of braces you’re wearing. However, generally, treatment times vary from 6 months to two years.
Your orthodontist will be able to give you a more accurate estimate before treatment begins, so you’ll know what to expect.
Will it hurt to get my braces on/off?
This depends on the individual and their tolerance for discomfort, but in general, most patients don’t feel much at all. You may feel some pressure during your treatment.
Will I be able to eat properly?
There should not be any change in your ability to eat. At first, you may find some foods difficult to eat and it is recommended that you stick to soft foods until you get used to them.
Certain products are available such as wax which can be used if you have any problems with the braces. You should not eat any hard or sticky food. Hard food may damage the braces and sticky food will remain stuck in the teeth for a long time, which causes tooth decay.
How will braces affect my oral health?
It is important to keep your teeth and mouth clean while wearing braces. Here are a few tips: Brush twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Harder bristles may damage the wires, brackets and bands.
Flossing is also very important. Wear rubber bands around your wrist to remind you to floss, at least once a day.* Use dental wax or sugar-free gum that contains xylitol three times a day.* Use dental wax or sugar-free gum that contains xylitol three times a day.*
